Press Release submitted to City Journals

SALT LAKE CITY – November 5, 2016 – Sherrie Swensen, Salt Lake County Clerk, wants to remind voters that this is a Vote-By-Mail Election. Every active registered voter was mailed a ballot. Even though there will be thirty seven Election Day Vote Centers open during regular polling hours, (7:00 am – 8:00 pm), they are not intended to replace the hundreds of traditional polling locations used in previous presidential elections. The Vote Centers are for those who did not receive a ballot, misplaced their ballot, need an audio ballot, or need to vote in person. “I strongly encourage voters who have a vote-by-mail ballot to return it and allow voters who need to use Election Day Vote Centers the opportunity to vote without having to stand in line,” said Swensen.

In an effort to increase convenience, voter turnout, and reduce costs, this year’s election process was again made vote-by-mail, as it was last year. However, because the mail-in- ballot return and early voting turnout has not been as high as expected, lengthy lines are possible for those who wait to vote in person on Election Day. As a reminder, the postmark deadline to return a ballot by mail is, Monday, November 7th. Fifteen drive- through ballot drop boxes are available throughout Salt Lake County where voters may drop their ballot until 8:00 pm on Election Day. Voters may also drop their ballot at any one of the vote centers on Election Day during polling hours (7:00 am – 8:00 pm) (walk & drop).
